A native of St. Petersburg, Anya Shatilova is a scholar, educator, and professional player of the Russian Slavic traditional instrument domra. Anya received a BM in Music Performance from St. Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts (Russia). As a solo and ensemble artist, she received numerous awards and was a founder of the ensemble “Esse-Quintet” that received international recognition and was featured in fRoots Magazine. Anya also received an MM in Musicology from the New England Conservatory of Music and MA in Ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University where she is currently perusing the doctoral degree.
Being engaged in the dissemination of Russian traditional music in the United States, Anya serves in the Board of Directors of the Balalaika & Domra Association of America. Apart from being an active practitioner of Russian traditional instrumental music, Anya is interested in the expansion of the repertoire for domra that led her to collaborations with her friend, experimental music composer Max Gibson.
Anya’s research interests include various musical practices in contemporary Russia and traditional Russian music scene outside the country. Some of her major interests are Russian Slavic music in the United States and the music of indigenous Finno-Ugric peoples in St. Petersburg, Russia.
